This Is A Nutritional Question, I Want To Know The Difference Between The Omega 3 In Fish Oil And In Flaxseed?

  • Posted on December 21, 2009 at 8:41 pm

I am a new vegetarian (well I’m old the veg thing is new) and I want to get info on which is the better Omega 3, or if there is any real difference between them. I would like to remove the seafood supplement from diet, but I really want to know if there is a difference between the two Omega 3s as it appears vital to neuro function.
Thanks

The Omega-3 found in flax is ALA which is the shortest form of Omega-3. Fish is a source of DHA and EPA. Our bodies have the ability to convert ALA into the longer forms but it is not known how effectively. Consuming ALA does not raise the levels of EPA and DHA in the blood but it is difficult to say whether or not it is just because our bodies only make as much as it needs and these fats are already in use outside of the bloodstream.http://www.veganhealth.org/articles/fat
The good news is that DHA is not made by fish, it is eaten by fish when they consume algae. Much of the DHA that is found in infant’s formula(ew, breast is best) is from algae. There are many products being release that have added algal DHA, for example:http://www.minutemaid.com/PomegranateBlu…
There are also flax seed oils with added algal DHA.http://www.spectrumorganics.com/?id=59#j…
